Research, Innovation, and Extension Services
Connecting farmers to knowledge, technology, and practical solutions

Kabarole District Farmers Association (KDFA) promotes farmer-centred research, innovation, and extension services to improve productivity, quality, and sustainability in agriculture. This programme bridges the gap between research institutions, extension services, and smallholder farmers by ensuring that new knowledge and technologies are practical, accessible, and locally relevant.

Why This Programme Matters

Many smallholder farmers lack timely access to reliable agricultural information, improved technologies, and extension support. As a result, adoption of innovations remains low, productivity suffers, and farmers are slow to respond to climate and market changes.

KDFA addresses this gap by strengthening community-based extension systems and linking farmers directly to research and innovation processes.

Our Approach

KDFA uses a participatory and practical approach that places farmers at the centre of learning and innovation.

We work through:

  • Farmer groups and demonstration sites

  • Community-based trainers and extension agents

  • Partnerships with research institutions and government agencies

  • Use of digital tools for information sharing

This approach ensures that research outputs translate into real improvements on farmers’ fields.

Farmer-Led Research and Innovation

KDFA promotes farmer participation in research and technology testing.

Key interventions include:

  • Establishing farmer-managed demonstration and learning sites

  • Supporting on-farm trials of improved seeds, breeds, and practices

  • Encouraging farmer feedback to improve technologies

  • Documenting and sharing local innovations and best practices

This strengthens ownership and adoption of innovations.

Extension Services and Knowledge Transfer

KDFA delivers practical extension services tailored to farmers’ needs.

Key interventions include:

  • Training farmers in improved production, processing, and post-harvest handling

  • Strengthening the skills of community-based trainers (CBTs)

  • Providing timely technical advice through group meetings and field visits

  • Promoting peer-to-peer learning and farmer exchange visits

These services improve productivity and quality across value chains.

Digital and E-Agriculture Solutions

KDFA promotes the use of digital tools to improve access to information.

Key interventions include:

  • Dissemination of market information and price updates

  • Sharing weather forecasts and early warning alerts

  • Supporting e-extension and mobile-based advisory services

  • Linking farmers to online knowledge and service platforms

Digital tools enhance decision-making and reduce risk for farmers.

Partnerships With Research and Government Institutions

KDFA works closely with public and private institutions to strengthen extension systems.

Key interventions include:

  • Collaboration with agricultural research institutes

  • Engagement with district and sub-county extension services

  • Alignment with national agricultural policies and programmes

  • Joint planning and implementation of extension activities

These partnerships ensure relevance, quality, and sustainability.
