Institutional Strengthening and Farmer Organisation Development
Institutional Strengthening and Farmer Organisation Development - Kabarole District Farmers Association, Uganda

Building strong farmer institutions for sustainable impact

Kabarole District Farmers Association (KDFA) recognises that strong, well-governed farmer organisations are essential for sustainable agricultural development and long-term community resilience. This programme focuses on strengthening farmer groups, networks, and institutions so they can effectively serve members, manage resources responsibly, and engage confidently with markets, government, and development partners.

Why This Programme Matters

Many smallholder farmers operate in weak or informal groups with limited leadership skills, governance systems, and access to information. Without strong institutions, farmers struggle to influence decisions, attract investment, or sustain development gains.

KDFA addresses these challenges by building the organisational, leadership, and management capacity of farmer groups and networks across Kabarole and Bunyangabu Districts.

Our Approach

KDFA applies a participatory and farmer-led approach to institutional development.

We work through:

  • Existing farmer groups and Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

  • Practical training and mentoring for leaders and members

  • Democratic governance and accountability structures

  • Partnerships with local government and national farmer platforms

This approach ensures ownership, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

Strengthening Farmer Group Governance and Leadership

KDFA supports farmer groups to improve leadership, decision-making, and accountability.

Key interventions include:

  • Training in leadership, governance, and group management

  • Support to develop clear constitutions, by-laws, and internal policies

  • Strengthening record-keeping, transparency, and accountability systems

  • Promoting democratic participation of members, including women and youth

Strong governance enables farmer groups to operate professionally and sustainably.

Capacity Building for Farmer Networks and Associations

KDFA strengthens farmer networks to improve coordination and collective action.

Key interventions include:

  • Developing and strengthening farmer councils and networks

  • Facilitating peer learning and experience sharing

  • Supporting coordination among groups at sub-county and district levels

  • Enhancing communication between farmers and service providers

This increases farmers’ collective voice and bargaining power.

Institutional Sustainability and Resource Mobilisation

KDFA helps farmer organisations plan for financial and operational sustainability.

Key interventions include:

  • Training in organisational planning and financial management

  • Support in developing bankable proposals and business plans

  • Linking farmer organisations to donors, financial institutions, and partners

  • Promoting income-generating activities for organisational sustainability

Sustainable institutions are better positioned to serve members over the long term.

Advocacy and Engagement With Government and Stakeholders

KDFA supports farmer organisations to engage constructively with duty bearers and partners.

Key interventions include:

  • Facilitating dialogue between farmers and local government authorities

  • Supporting farmer participation in policy discussions and planning processes

  • Promoting social accountability and citizen engagement

  • Strengthening representation through national farmer platforms

This ensures farmers’ interests are reflected in policies and programmes.
