Kabarole District Farmers Association (KDFA) has successfully implemented a range of development projects over the last two decades in partnership with local, national, and international organisations. These projects have focused on improving agricultural productivity, financial inclusion, youth empowerment, governance, and community resilience.
Our projects are designed to deliver measurable impact to smallholder farmers, youth, and rural communities, and provide strong opportunities for donors and partners to support sustainable development.
KDFA - Enabel Youth Agricultural Skills Programme (2025 to 2026)
The programme provides practical skills training in:
Poultry farming
Beekeeping (apiary)
Pig farming

KDFA-Youth Skills Development in Avocado Value Chain with Enabel/BTC, Current
KDFA is implementing a youth skills development project in partnership with Enabel/BTC across three sub-counties: Mugusu, Kibiito, and Kasenda.
Key Achievements:
Training youth in agriculture, value addition, and enterprise management
Promoting avocado production, processing, and marketing
Creating green jobs and youth-led agribusiness opportunities
Strengthening market linkages and financial literacy
This initiative builds sustainable livelihoods for rural youth while enhancing productivity in high value crops.
KDFA -SLA Banking on Change 2 (BoC 2) Project with CARE International, 2013 to 2015
The BoC 2 Project focused on promoting financial literacy, linkage banking, and entrepreneurship within youth VSLAs in 11 sub-counties of Kabarole District.
Key Achievements:
Strengthened 268 youth VSLA groups with 6,700 members (77% aged 14–24 years)
Delivered training in financial literacy, business skills, and enterprise development
Linked 144 mature VSLA groups to formal financial institutions
Enhanced monitoring and evaluation systems for youth savings activities
Improved income generation and employability skills
This project demonstrates KDFA’s leadership in youth financial empowerment and enterprise development.
KDFA - Citizens’ Manifesto Project with BUDI and RAC, 2012 to 2013
In partnership with Bunyangabu Development Initiatives (BUDI) and Rwenzori Anti-Corruption Coalition (RAC), KDFA implemented a Citizens’ Manifesto project to enhance social accountability.
Key Achievements:
Raised awareness among communities about rights and civic responsibilities
Enabled citizen engagement and demand for accountability from local leaders
Strengthened community advocacy and participation in governance
This project enhanced transparency and social empowerment among rural communities.
KDFA - CARE International VSLA Programmes: Save Up, Sustain II and Banking on Change (BoC II), 2009 to 2016
KDFA partnered with CARE International Uganda to strengthen Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) across Kabarole District.
Key Achievements:
Formed and trained over 641 VSLA groups with more than 15,000 members
Promoted financial literacy, business planning, and enterprise development
Facilitated linkage banking with formal financial institutions
Enabled savings of over UGX 1.5 billion, with profitable share-outs exceeding UGX 355 million
Built youth and women’s capacity for financial management and entrepreneurship
This programme significantly increased economic empowerment and financial inclusion for rural households.
KDFA – Farm Africa Garlic Production, Processing and Marketing Project, 2005 to 2013
KDFA partnered with Farm Africa/MATF to develop the garlic value chain for smallholder farmers.
Key Achievements:
Trained farmers in garlic production and post-harvest handling
Supported processing and value addition
Linked farmers to local and regional markets
Increased household incomes and food security
This project demonstrates how value chain development can transform agricultural production into profitable enterprises.
KDFA – NAADS Farmer Institutional Development Project, 2004 to 2009
In collaboration with NAADS, KDFA implemented Farmer Institutional Development (FID) across three sub-counties in Kabarole District.
Key Achievements:
Strengthened farmer group structures and governance
Built capacity in group management, record-keeping, and leadership
Encouraged collective decision-making for better access to services and inputs
Enabled farmer participation in national agricultural programmes
The project reinforced institutional sustainability of farmer groups, improving service delivery and group cohesion.
KDFA – DANIDA Technology Demonstration Project, 2000 to 2009
KDFA partnered with DANIDA under the Agricultural Sector Programme Support (A-SPS I & II) to enhance advisory services and establish technology demonstration sites across Kabarole District.
Key Achievements:
Provided salary support and transport facilities to improve agricultural advisory services
Established technology demonstration sites showcasing improved crops, livestock, and farming practices
Trained farmers in innovative agricultural techniques
Enhanced farmer adoption of climate-smart and sustainable farming methods
This long-term partnership enabled KDFA to strengthen farmer capacity and improve agricultural productivity in the region.
