Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Smart Farming
Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Smart Farming - Kabarole District Farmers Association, Uganda

Improving productivity while protecting the environment

Kabarole District Farmers Association (KDFA) empowers farmers to adopt sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices that increase yields, improve livelihoods, and protect natural resources. This programme helps farmers grow more efficiently, adapt to climate change, and ensure long-term farm productivity.

Why This Programme Matters

Smallholder farmers face challenges including soil degradation, unpredictable weather, low productivity, and environmental stress. Without improved practices, yields stagnate, and rural communities remain vulnerable to climate shocks.

KDFA addresses these challenges by promoting practical, environmentally friendly solutions and strengthening farmer capacity to manage resources sustainably.

Our Approach

KDFA uses a hands-on, participatory approach to encourage adoption of sustainable agriculture:

  • Farmer training and demonstration plots

  • Climate smart techniques integrated into daily farming activities

  • Collaboration with research institutions, extension services, and local authorities

  • Community-based learning and farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing

This approach ensures practices are locally relevant, practical, and sustainable.

Key Programme Components

1. Improved Crop and Livestock Production

  • Training in modern crop, livestock, dairy, fisheries, and apiary production

  • Introduction of high-yielding, resilient varieties and breeds

2. Climate-Smart and Environmentally Friendly Practices

  • Soil and water conservation methods (contour farming, mulching, organic manure)

  • Agroforestry and tree planting for soil fertility, shade, and climate resilience

  • Sustainable water management and wetland protection

3. Technology Demonstration and Farmer Learning

  • Farmer-managed demonstration plots to test and adopt new technologies

  • Farmer exchange visits and peer learning opportunities
