Youth Empowerment and Green Job Creation
Youth Empowerment and Green Job Creation - Kabarole District Farmers Association, Uganda

Unlocking opportunities for young people in agriculture

Kabarole District Farmers Association (KDFA) supports young people to see agriculture as a viable, profitable, and dignified livelihood. This programme equips rural youth with practical skills, financial literacy, and enterprise development support to create green jobs and sustainable incomes within the agricultural sector.

KDFA places youth at the centre of rural transformation by promoting farming as a business and a pathway to long-term economic independence.

Why This Programme Matters

Youth unemployment and underemployment remain major challenges in rural Uganda. Many young people lack access to land, capital, skills, and market opportunities, leading to poverty and rural–urban migration.

KDFA addresses these challenges by providing youth with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to engage meaningfully in agriculture and agribusiness.

Our Approach

KDFA applies an inclusive and practical approach that responds to the real needs of rural youth.

We work through:

  • Youth-led farmer groups and associations

  • Hands-on training and mentorship

  • Financial inclusion through youth VSLAs

  • Partnerships with development agencies and the private sector

This approach builds confidence, skills, and long-term commitment among young farmers.

Skills Development and Agripreneurship

KDFA equips youth with technical and business skills for success in agriculture.

Key interventions include:

  • Training in modern farming techniques across key value chains

  • Agribusiness and enterprise development training

  • Selection planning and management of income-generating activities

  • Business start-up and growth mentoring

These skills enable youth to plan, invest, and manage profitable enterprises.

Financial Literacy and Access to Finance for Youth

KDFA promotes a strong savings culture and access to financial services among young people.

Key interventions include:

  • Formation and strengthening of youth-led VSLAs

  • Training in financial literacy and money management

  • Linkage banking with formal financial institutions

  • Support to youth enterprises to access capital

This reduces financial exclusion and supports youth entrepreneurship.

Green Jobs and Value Chain Development

KDFA promotes environmentally sustainable employment opportunities.

Key interventions include:

  • Engagement of youth in climate-smart agriculture

  • Skills development in value chains such as avocado, coffee, and horticulture

  • Promotion of agro-processing and value addition

  • Support for environmentally friendly technologies and practices

Green jobs contribute to income growth while protecting the environment.

Mentorship, Coaching, and Leadership

KDFA supports youth beyond technical skills development.

Key interventions include:

  • Continuous mentorship and coaching

  • Leadership and life skills development

  • Peer learning and role modelling

  • Support for youth participation in farmer organisations

This builds responsible, confident, and future-oriented leaders.
